In Spring Valley, California
At her home, as she wished
Kathleen Colleen Aiken was born in La Mesa, California on September 13th, 1946. Her parents were Dorothy Jane (McCormick) and John Victor Aiken. She attended local schools, and spent summers playing with her cousins.
After graduating from Mount Miguel High School, Kathy married and on January 4th, 1969 gave birth to a son, John Aiken Viessman. She found joy and purpose in being Johnny’s mom, and she was proud of his accomplishments in both music and bowling.
Kathy supported herself and her son by working at Dryers Furniture and Sears in Chula Vista. Later, she began a career in the La Mesa Spring Valley School District, and it was there that she found her calling as a Community Resource Specialist. She used her tremendous networking skills to make children’s lives better.
It was at Spring Valley Elementary that Kathy met her future husband and the love of her life. Mitch Heath was a single father of four. She appreciated his devotion to his children: Susan,Tiffany, Joe and Jack. Mitch found joy in her humor. After ten years together, they married on November 14th, 2009. It was the beginning of a great adventure. She and Mitch took 8 cruises and trips to the Bahamas, Cozumel, Belize, New York, New Orleans and Chrystal Pier. They lived each day, together, to the fullest. When she passed, it was at home, as she wished, and Mitch was at her side.
Kathy had a tremendous capacity for love and friendship. People mattered more to her than ‘things’. She gave of herself to help her community through Los Dones Women’s Group, the Spring Valley Historical Society, the Spring Valley Women’s Club, and the Zoo School /Jerry Meeker Foundation.
She made a profound difference. She will be missed.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held on
Thursday, June 14th at 1:00 pm at
Unity Church in El Cajon.
